E-Mentoring - Give a little back, make a big difference
Share |

Become an ITT Dublin E-Mentor!

Have you recently graduated from the college? Like many others, did you have a ball at ITT Dublin and would you like to give back something small in return? This could be your chance.

For the first time, ITT Dublin Careers Service is co-ordinating with ITT Dublin Graduates Association on an E-Mentorship program for Final Year students. The program will begin at the start of the 2011/2012 academic year and will run from mid September to March each year.

It's no secret that job hunting for graduates is more difficult than ever in Ireland at present. Even a little guidance for students entering this competitive environment can make a massive difference. You can make that difference.

What is an E-Mentor?

An E-Mentor is a graduate who is working in an organisation and willing to share their work/job experience with their Mentee, the final year student. The E-Mentor will commit to:

  • Communicate monthly by email/Skype.
  • Provide support/advice for the Final Year student. Typical queries would be:
    • How did you get into this sector/industry?
    • What do you like about working in this organisation?
    • What advice would you have for me as a final year student?
    • Could you look at my CV and give me some feedback?
    • What professional organisations are you a member of? Is there student membership?
  • Hosting a ‘work-shadow’ half day for the student (optional)

What are the benefits for Mentors?

  • Participate in a programme with both ITT Dublin Careers Service and the Graduates Association.
  • Share your experiences with ‘soon to be graduates’ interested in working in your industry sector
  • Establish / re-establish a link with ITT Dublin and the community
  • Network with other E-mentors / colleagues from the business community
  • Motivate and support a future graduate to raise his/her level of professional attainment
  • Give something great back to the Institute and add it to your CV

The programme includes:

  • Sept – Oct: Pairing of E-Mentors and Mentee’s, based on the student aspiration to work in that industry sector and/or to understand a job role. Introductory meeting of E-Mentors and Mentees hosted by ITT Dublin
  • Oct – Feb: E-Mentor sponsors ‘work shadow’ half day for the Mentee (this is optional but encouraged!)
  • March: Closing Event and presentation of Certificates to Mentees.

E-Mentoring is not about securing a job/work experience, the purpose is to help the Final Year student understand what it is like to work in the sector/organisation.

For those of you considering getting involved, we guarantee this will be an extremely rewarding experience for both Mentors and Mentees. So please do get in touch!

How do you get involved?

If you feel you have the experience in your field to be of benefit, and if you are interested in becoming an E-Mentor, please contact Fionnuala Rahilly, ITT Dublin Careers Advisor at careers@ittdublin.ie

CLOSING DATE FOR GETTING INVOLVED IS 19TH SEPTEMBER
