ITT Dublin Proposed New MBA in Innovation Management

Programme Aims

This programme is designed to offer a variety of challenges to graduates from different disciplinary backgrounds (business, engineers and science graduates).  The programme will develop specialist skills that will enable participants to improve the product and process innovation strategies of companies/organisations. Surveys indicate that in practice, innovation in industry is managed poorly, with over 60% of change programmes failing to meet objectives. It is expected that the programme will contribute to improving the ability of managers to manage innovation effectively by developing awareness of the success factors and pitfalls in the innovation process. It will provide an attractive professional development route for existing business people (both technical and non-technical specialists) and meet the needs of graduates from different disciplinary backgrounds.

Programme Objectives

The main objectives of the programme are to provide participants in the manufacturing and service industries with the knowledge and skills to improve the performance of their organizations through:

  • Managing new product innovation strategies effectively
  • Identifying and exploiting new market segments
  • Identifying new process technologies that are appropriate to their organizations and that will contribute to improving operational efficiency and competitiveness
  • Managing the introduction of new process technologies, including new forms of work organization - through a staged process that involves identifying, sourcing, implementing and consolidating the change
  • Identifying new business opportunities and developing new strategic alliances
  • Improving and reorganising interactions with customers and suppliers in the value chain
  • Managing people and teams for innovation
  • Managing knowledge effectively, fostering idea generation and problem solving Exploiting opportunities for innovation through co-operation with other research and industry support organisations
Programme Structure
  • Delivered over two years (part-time) with an option to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma in Innovation Management (one year) and an MBA (two years).
  • The first year taught programme will consist of eight modules (four per semester) and lead to a Postgraduate Diploma in Innovation Management.
  • Participants who continue to year 2 and complete the Research Methods Module and the dissertation will and receive an MBA in Innovation Management. Students may complete the taught component over two or more years to suit their professional and personal circumstances.
Characteristics of the programme:
  • The programme will be multidisciplinary. Each module will be developed by a multidisciplinary team with representatives from the Schools of Business, Engineering and Science. All modules will also have inputs from industry practitioners as an integral part of the delivery process.
  • Strategic. The programme will facilitate synergies with the Institute's Incubation Centre (Synergy) and the M50 Enterprise Platform Programme
  • Market for the Programme. The programme will provide a professional development path for graduates from different disciplinary backgrounds.
  • Multi-sectoral Focus/Applicability. The programme will have a strong applied focus. It will employ case studies of innovation management in different sectors e.g. the pharma, ICT, FMCG, food and services sectors.
  • Action Learning. The dissertation element will engage the student in an applied research project that will have significant implications for their workplace.
